Crochet an egg hat this Easter!

Crochet an egg hat this Easter!

Have fun with this easy and fun Easter crochet project!

It is never too late to get in the mood for Easter weekend. Even when times are rough, we can gather at the breakfast table and be thankful for what we have. And why not cheer up the occasion with a few Easter eggs wearing funny Easter egg crochet hats? This crochet project is nice to do with kids and is a great way to spend some free time hours at home. This crochet pattern is quite straight forward and each “egg hat” only takes a few meters of yarn. Perfect for your yarn stash with left overs. We used our Soft Cotton DK yarn as we think it is the prefect yarn for this project. It is budget friendly and completely recycled. The best of both worlds! Out of 1 bobbin Soft Recycled Cotton DK you can make around 3 egg hats.

Free pattern Bunny Ears Easter Egg Cover

We made this cute little Easter beanies for eggs with a crochet hook 4 mm (US 6) and with Soft Cotton DK in the colours; Tokio Turquoise, Jaipur Rose en Riga Yellow. Please note that this free tutorial for Easter crochet egg hats has been written in UK- English. We advise US readers to keep their crochet conversion table close!

Step 1: crochet the Egg hat.

R1: Make a magic loop and crochet 6 dc in the ring, close with a ss (=6).
R2: Inc.: ch 1, 2 dc in every stitch, close with a ss (=12).
R3: Inc.: ch 1, *1 dc, 2 dc in same stitch*, close with a ss (=18).
R4: Inc.: ch 1, *5 dc, 2 dc in same stitch*, close with a ss (=21).
R5: Inc.: ch 1, *6 dc, 2 dc in same stitch*, close with a ss (=24).
R6-10: ch 1, 1 dc in every stitch, close with a ss (=24).

Cast off. You now have a tiny crochet hat of around 5 cm in diameter. Perfect for your boiled egg!

Step 2: crochet the bunny Ears (crochet two!)

Each ear is made by 2 sides that you crochet together. So for two ears you make 4 sides in total.

Front side ear 1:
Ch 10
R1: Inc.: Start in 2nd ch from your crochet hook, 8 dc, 3 dc in last ch, 8 dc in the bottom, close with a ss (=19).
R2: Inc.: ch 1, 8 dc, 1 htr, 3 tr in same stitch, 1 htr, 8 dc, close with a ss (=21). Cast off.

Back side ear 1:

Place 2 sides on top of each other – wrong sides facing to each other and crochet together roundabout with 21 dc.

Make another ear and attach the 2 hats with a whip stitch onto the hat.

Tip: To create folded ears with a 3d- effect, you can choose to fold the ears on the bottom and fix it with a dc before starting to sew the ears onto the hat.
