Customise your fedora with some leftover textile yarn

A fun way to brighten up a summer hat is to use the Brazilian knotting technique. You may remember this technique from Brazilian friendship bracelets. With the simple technique and some different coloured textile yarns, you can quickly whip up some colourful bands for your summer hat. You can customise the bands to match each of your summer outfits!

What do you need?

  • A few metres of super chunky textile yarn in the colours you like. Or whatever you have left in your yarn stash. It is important that you choose a low-stretch yarn in similar thicknesses. This way you will get the best results. Hoooked Spesso is the best choice for this project. Moreover, you can comb out the ends in a fluffy way for that perfect boho beach vibe.
  • A pair of scissors
  • A macramé board or other place to tie your creation (a doorknob works great, but alternatively you can tape the yarn on your table as well)
  • A darning needle (always comes in handy)

Below you will find two simple and easy options for different patterns with the Brazilian technique. Once you have mastered this technique you can experiment further with the knotting. Add for example several extra colours and change the directions of the knots Brazilian macramé has endless variations.

Knotting a Chevron colour sequence

Below are the steps you need to take to knot a chevron v-shaped pattern. The most important thing is that you work both sides from outside to inside and then connect the remain threads knots on the inside. You can repeat the V-form sequence with 2 or of course more colours.

Knotting a diagonal colour sequence

These diagonal stripes are worked very easily. Below are the steps you can follow for knotting diagonal stripes from left to right. The illustration is with 2 colours, but once you have mastered the technique, you can experiment further with adding more colours in different sequences. And of course, you can also knot from right-to left!

Great idee: replace your shoulder strap and give your old bag a new, hip boho look

Are you totally under the spell of these Brazilian knots and want to use it for other projects? The above techniques can also be used to knot a trendy bag handle to replace an old bag handle on your ats. In that case, in addition to 5-6 metres of Hoooked Spesso, you will also need two sturdy carabiner musketon hooks. A darning needle can help you to tuck away the remaining threads between the knots.
