Halloween is even better with crochet pumpkins!

When Autumn is settling in in many households, like ours, families gear up for Halloween, one of the most beloved holidays! At Hoooked there is a lot of Halloween crafting involved; from the traditional pumpkin carving and sewing of spooky costumes for the children to baking our favourite Halloween pie and sugar-crafting DIY candy for trick and treat evening. Anything to make this occasion more festive will do!

In the midst of all the Halloween crafting and the sugar rushes, it is great to grab some downtime and relax with the crochet hook; we call this “relaxing pumpkin crochet time”.

We made our first crochet pumpkin in 2009; a giant version with double strands of Hoooked Zpagetti and a 15 mm crochet hook. In later years we have made crochet pumpkins with all our Hoooked yarns and enjoying the process of making them.  It is a fun and uncomplicated little project and we think crochet pumpkins make a cute DIY Halloween gift. At Hoooked crochet pumpkins have become a favourite Halloween décor piece - once you have made them you can re-use them every year!

In this blog post, we will share a free basic pattern for a crochet pumpkin with Zpagetti. You can replicate this pattern with all sorts of yarn to create different shapes and sizes. You do not even have to work with orange yarn as a basis!  Just go with the flow and use whatever yarn you have at hand.

If you are looking for a complete DIY kit for a crochet Halloween pumpkin, then make sure to check our DIY Pumpkin kits. You can choose to either make a pumpkin with Zpagetti t-shirt yarn or a festive pumpkin garland with our recycled Soft Cotton DK. Both these kits are great for confident beginners and make a fun DIY gift for crafty Halloween lovers!

Level: Easy

Please note: This pattern uses UK crochet terms.

What you need:

Stitches used (UK terms):

  • ch - Chain

  • dc - Double crochet

  • BLO - Back loop only

  • [*] - Sequence of stitches to repeat

  • (*) - Number of stitches at the end of the round

Row 1: Chain 15, turn and crochet 1 dc in every chain (14)

Row 2: in BLO, 14 dc, turn (14)

Rows 3-32: in BLO, 14 dc, turn (14) 30 rows

Row 33: Join top and bottom with a row of slip stitches

Weave yarn through the bottom and pull tight to close, fill the pumpkin with cotton filling and repeat at the top. Crochet the leaves in a different colour. Attach the yarn in the top centre, chain 5 and turn and crochet 1 dc in each chain. Repeat another 4 times to create 5 leaves. Optionally create a stem in the centre with 3 chains.

As said, you can use this pattern as a base for your crochet pumpkins. You can adjust the size of the pumpkins by using different yarns or changing the stitch count or row count.

Variation: crochet a festive pumpkin garland!

With the above base pattern for a crochet pumpkin, you can vary to create different Halloween pumpkins. Experiment with different yarns, stitch count, and row count to create different sizes and shapes. Another great project is a pumpkin garland. For this, we recommend using thinner yarn, such as Soft Cotton DK, combined with a 4 mm crochet hook. You attach the pumpkins to the garland by stitching through the stem. Now get the party started. We wish you a scary and pumpkin-filled crafty Halloween!
