How to crochet the star stitch

The star stitch is one of our favourite geometrical crochet stitches! This gorgeous and intricate-looking crochet stitch is easier than it looks, but still not for beginners — it's easiest to learn to crochet the star stitch if you've got a bit of crochet experience under our belt already!

The star stitch is worked over 2 rows, so don't panic if you don't see the pattern straight away! Just follow the 12 steps below and you'll be a star stitching up a storm in no time — and once you’ve mastered the stitch, you will be Hoooked. Without a doubt. Below is a step by step explanation of the star stitch.

How to crochet the star stitch

  1. Chain the number of stitches the pattern requires. In the next row you will leave the loops on the hook.
  2. Pull up 6 loops on the hook, yarn over, and pull through all the loops on the hook.
  3. Yarn over and pull though the loop on the hook.
  4. Insert your hook in the big opening, yarn over and leave the loop on the hook.
  5. Insert your hook in the next loop, yarn over and leave this loop on the hook as well.
  6. Proceed with inserting, yarning over while leaving the loops on the hook until you have 6 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all the loops.
  7. Yarn over and pull though the loop on the hook.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 until the end of the row. Finish the row with a half treble (UK).
  9. Chain 2 at the beginning of the row.
  10. Crochet two half trebles (UK) through the large openings.
  11. Crochet the last half treble in the upper loop from the last stitch.
  12. Crochet 3 turning chains and start a new row.

We hope that this tutorial will help you master the star stitch. It is such a pretty stitch to use! The star stitch works its magic in crochet cushions, bags and large rugs. But it's also great for crocheting placemats and napkin rings in for a festively set table. We prefer to crochet the star stitch with the chunky RibbonXL yarn. The stitch gives the project at hand a nice deep structure, with clear visible stars, while the yarn works nice and light.
