Recycled Textile Yarns
Textile recycling is the process of reusing or repurposing textile materials that would otherwise be discarded as waste. It involves collecting, sorting, and processing old textiles such as clothing, linens, and fabrics to give them new life and purpose.
Textile recycling has numerous environmental benefits, including:
- reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills,
- conserving natural resources by decreasing the demand for new raw materials,
- lowering energy and water usage compared to the production of new textiles.
Additionally, it can support local economies through the creation of jobs in collection, sorting, and processing facilities. Textile recycling can take various forms, including mechanical recycling where textiles are shredded and turned into new fibres, as well as chemical recycling methods that break down textiles into their original components for reuse. Overall, textile recycling plays a crucial role in promoting sustainability and circularity within the fashion and textile industries.
Zpagetti, our iconic T-shirt yarn, is selected by hand and sorted in small runs by colour shade and composition. Then the selected materials are winded into our unique bobbins. Hoooked Zpagetti is truly unique, as new colours are added every day.
Other recycled textile yarns you can find at Hoooked are RibbonXL, Milano, Spesso, Odyssey Lurex, Wavy Blends, Cordino and Soft Cotton DK. They have different yarn weights and textures, offering inspiration for everyone.
These recycled cotton yarns are mechanically pulverised leftovers, mixed to make new colours, spun, twisted, or knitted. We do not additionally dye and the whole recycling process is dye- and water-free. These yarns are all fully recycled from textile remnants. As they are recycled in larger batches, you have a better chance of re-ordering the same colour run.
Plant-based Yarns
Inspired by recycling, we explored other sustainable materials, adding plant-based yarns to our catalogue, like Jute, Eucalyps, Somen and Atlantica. These yarns embody the essence of earth-friendly crafting, as their production tries to ensure a low environmental impact.
Jute was the first Hoooked yarn that did not have its origin in recycling but in the natural production of raw fibres. This fair trade fibre is harvested in the Amazon region and is processed by a BCS-certified, sustainably operating family business in Brazil. It’s made without fertiliser or pesticides and it’s available in 7 toxic-free colours. You have the option to select from two different thicknesses - Jute Amazónia (jumbo) and Jute Tossa (light).
Somen, Eucalyps and Atlantica are plant-based DK yarns. Somen is a strong and cool cotton-linen mix, and Eucalyps is silky soft and made from leftover fibres from the harvesting of eucalyptus trees for European paper production. Atlantica is crafted with a blend of Seacell derived from seaweed, recycled and organic cotton fibres.
