What is the surface area you can knit or crochet from 1 bobbin Hoooked yarn?

Earlier we wrote a blog about how to calculate how much yarn you need for poufs, rugs and other round projects. In this blog we will tell you how many cm² you can knit or crochet from 1 bobbin of Hoooked yarn and how you can calculate how many bobbins you need for a project. In this blog we give you an average about what you can knit or crochet out of 1 bobbin. Because everyone knits or crochets differently, we always advise to crochet or knit a tension swatch yourself to check how many bobbins you will need for your project. Follow these steps and you will know in no time how many bobbins you will need!

Step 1

Make a table:

A B
C D

Step 2

Weigh your ball of yarn, taking Somen as an example: 1 bobbin of Somen weighs 100g. Write it down in the table at position D.

Step 3

Knit or crochet a piece in a surface area of your choice. We knitted a piece of exactly 10cmx10cm, which gives us a surface area of 100cm². Write the 100cm² at position A in the table.

Step 4

Weigh this piece. Our piece weighted 8g. Write this down in the table at position B.

Step 5

10cmx10cm=100cm² B 8g
C ? 100g

Now you will calculate how many cm² you can crochet with 1 bobbin of 100g. Write the answer in the table at position C.

Calculation: =….. /

1. Multiply A with D. So in our case 100x100= 10.000

2. Divide the result at 1 with B. So in our case 10.000/8=1250

3. C is the result of 2. This is the surface area that you can knit or crochet out of 1 bobbin. In our case you can knit a surface area of 1250cm² out of 1 bobbin Somen.

4. Draw the square root from the number of C. Now you know how big the square is you can knit or crochet out of 1 bobbin. If you draw the square root from 1250cm² , the result will be the number 35. So you can knit a piece of 35cmx35cm out of 1 bobbin Somen.

If I want to knit a blanket of 91cmx120cm= surface area 10920cm2, how many bobbins of Somen do I need?

10920/1250= 8,7. So I will need 9 bobbins of Somen.
