A free crochet pattern for a fun and vibrant shoulder bag

Neon yarns are fully back in fashion and may we say: super exciting to work with. The RibbonXL neon yarns are made with both recycled cotton and recycled polyester and are almost glow in the dark! The neon collection yarn has the same yarn weight as the regular RibbonXL colours, so both yarn types can be perfectly combined in your craft projects. But why combine if you can make a neon-exclusive project, right? Well for all neon-lovers out there, we are happy to share our free pattern for a neon-coloured shoulder bag. The length of the straps can be adjusted to even make it a cross-body bag.

Materials:

Stitches (UK terms):

Chain (ch)
Treble (tr)
slip stitch (sl.st)
Increase
Decrease

Note: You crochet around the foundation chain, increase in the outer stitch, turn the piece at the end and work in the single loop at the underside of the foundation chain. In order to maintain a smooth oval base shape, you increase in both of the outer stitches of the foundation chain. The stitches are indicative as you can adjust the number of stitches to create the size you need.

Step 1: Crochet the bag

Start with Radical Rose, chain 25 (+ 3 chains, which is counting as 1 treble).

1. Go back in the chain (4rd chain stitch from the hook) and crochet 1 tr in each stitch in the last stitch add 2 trebles to arrive at the other side of the chain. Crochet 1 tr in each stitch until arriving at the first chain, add 2 tr in this last stitch. Close with a sl.st. and chain 3 (count as 1st tr in the next round).

2-4. Crochet round about tr in radical rose, closing each round with a sl.st and ch 3to start the next round, change to colour Electric Lime in the last yarn over of the last tr in round 4.

5-7. Crochet round about tr in Electric Lime closing each round with a sl.st and ch 3 to start the next round, change to colour Atomic Tangerine in the last yarn over of the last tr in round 7.

8-9. Crochet round about tr in Atomic Tangerine closing each round with a sl.st and ch 3 to start the next round. Close with a sl.st and fasten off.

Step 2:  Create the handles (2x)

10. Attach colour Laser Lemon 2 stitches from the middle point of the front panel and crochet 1 tr in each stitch until reaching the same point at the back panel.

11-15. Go back skip the first stitch, crochet until the other side and skip the last stitch. Continuing decreasing outer stitches until you have reached 4 stitches (or decrease until you have reached the size you like).

15-30. Crochet 1 tr in each tr until you have reached the desired height. Repeat 10-30 at the other side of the bag and join both sides with a darning needle. Weave in loose ends and hit the streets!
