Yarn Leftovers, what now?
We’ve all been there—playing a game of “yarn chicken” as we race to finish a project, holding our breath and hoping the last few stitches don’t outlast our yarn supply. Whether you win or lose that game, you're often left with those odd scraps that seem too small for a new project but too precious to toss away.
In the world of crafting, every bit of yarn holds potential! Instead of letting those leftover scraps gather dust, why not repurpose them into something both beautiful and functional? Embracing sustainability in your projects not only reduces waste but also sparks creativity as you discover new ways to use every last strand. Reducing waste while crafting is easier and more rewarding than you might think, especially when you let your imagination guide you with those overlooked yarn bits. From vibrant coasters and patchwork blankets to intricate granny squares and charming amigurumi figures, the possibilities are endless.
For even smaller scraps, there is always the possibility of making tassels or even using them as filling for other projects.
To help you get started, we're thrilled to offer a free pattern designed specifically for making the most of your yarn leftovers. This pattern not only ensures that nothing goes to waste but also results in a stunning, one-of-a-kind project that you’ll be proud to show off. Let’s dive into the art of sustainable crafting and turn those yarn scraps into true treasures!
Shell and Starfish Soap Dishes in Zpagetti
Designer Nicky from A heart-shaped cherry created this beautiful pattern to help you keep clean and green - crochet soap dishes using remnants of Hoooked Zpagetti yarn!
The soap dishes can be popped in the wash and air-dried, so make several and swap them over when you change your towels! You’ll be saving your remnants of textile waste from landfill and, in 10 - 15 minutes, you’ll have a cute and practical soap dish!
The star and shellfish soap dishes are worked in the round using the magic ring method. They feature raised stitches worked around the posts of previous rows/rounds to create ridges, enabling air to circulate underneath your soap and keeping it drier.
We used Zpagetti yarn - approx. 20m of medium thickness (you can use two strands if your yarn is a little thin - if you do, you will need to double the yarn amount). Stretchy and non-stretchy yarns are both suitable.
It's a beginner-friendly pattern and a delightful, quick project perfect for your breaks. Choose your favourite yarn and colour, and spread the love!
