Crochet for beginners! Get started with the absolute basics!

Are you looking for a new hobby and want to learn how to crochet? Here are some handy beginner's tips and tricks. In this blog we will teach you how to hold and use the crochet hook. Once you start crocheting, the first thing you need to learn is how to hold the crochet hook so that you can work smoothly. There are two different ways to hold the crochet hook. There is no right or wrong way to hold the crochet hook. However, it is important to hold the crochet hook loosely. Don't put too much tension on the hook and don't hold it at the end or near the hook. The trick is to adopt a relaxed working position so that your hand and wrists are not overloaded and the yarn is evenly distributed.

Different ways of holding the hook

We recommend that beginners crochet with a super chunky yarn and a large crochet hook. This is better for practising your fine motor skills, you see better what you're doing and (not unimportantly) you get results quickly!

In this blog we will be working with:

We choose a bamboo crochet hook because they are ergonomically shaped, lightweight and work smoothly with this super chunky recycled cotton yarn. Of course, you can also practice with a yarn and crochet hook of your own choice!

There are two ways to hold the crochet hook. These are explained below. Some people prefer one way or the other. Other people vary the method according to the project they want to make.

1. The pencil method

Many people hold the crochet hook like a pencil or pen. The tip of the thumb and index finger rest on the flat part of the needle. This is especially fine when making work with finer yarns. This way of crocheting finer crochet works. In this way you have good manoeuvrability and are able to make fine motoric movements.

2. The knife method

You grab the crochet hook with the flat part between your thumb and forefinger. This method is particularly suitable for work with coarser and sturdier yarns. By handling the crochet hook like a meat cleaver, you fix your wrists and avoid straining them.

Direction of the crochet hook

Depending on the stitch you want to make and the way you want to work the yarn, the hook of the needle points upwards, downwards, forwards or backwards.

How do you hold the thread when crocheting?

This is essential. The flow of the yarn facilitates a correct stitch pattern. This is called tension the tail.  Especially when you are starting out, you will have a tendency to crochet tightly. This can be prevented by a relaxed supply of yarn.

Hold the crochet hook in your right hand and guide the yarn with your left hand to ensure that the thread is evenly distributed. You can wrap the thread around your little or ring finger (or both) to make this easier. The thread supply is important to ensure that you do not crochet too tightly or too loosely.

With the index finger you’ll bring the yarn into position and towards the hook. Take the yarn over the forefinger with the hook and pull it through the loop. Take care to work with the long thread (which comes from the ball of yarn) and not with the short thread.

Tip:  Are you left-handed? Keep the crochet hook on the left and the yarn on the right. It might help to use a mirror to look at the images.

Wow! You have finished the blog and can now practice holding the crochet hook and the yarn. This will be a little awkward in the beginning, but that will soon be over!
